Getting it Right: Best Practices for Documenting Gifts 
This session will explore legal and administrative issues, opportunities, and best practices for documenting gifts.  Types of gifts discussed in detail include donor intent documentation, will or trust bequests, beneficiary designation of retirement plans, pledges, endowments, scholarship funds, donor advised funds, naming recognition, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, life estates/remainder interest of residence or farm, deeds of property (tangible personal property, real estate, intangible property), owner/beneficiary of life insurance, gift receipts or acknowledgements, and more.  Questions and discussion will be encouraged. CFRE: Full participation in Getting it Right: Best Practices for Document Gifts is applicable for 1.25 points in Category 1.B -Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification. MCLE: pending approval.

Philip M. Purcell, MPA, JD, Territory Director of Planned Giving, The Salvation Army Central Territory
Phil Purcell serves as Director of Planned Giving for the Central Territory of The Salvation Army.  He is the directional leader of thirty planned giving staff in eleven states who close approximately $70 million a year in planned gifts.  Phil is an attorney licensed in Indiana and serves as Vice-Chair of the Charitable Giving Committee of the American Bar Association’s Real Property Trust and Estate section.  He is a twenty-year adjunct faculty member of the Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy, The Fundraising School, and Maurer School of Law.  Phil is President-Elect of the American Council on Gift Annuities Board, former Director and Secretary of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners Board, former Director and President of the Planned Giving Group of Indiana Board, and Editor of Planned Giving Today.


Gift Planning Marketing Strategies at the University of Minnesota
Susan will present on the University of Minnesota’s comprehensive marketing approach that drives donor engagement using predictive analytics. The goal of Minnesota’s gift planning marketing program is to produce consistent and strategic marketing messaging that that reaches our most likely prospects and donors at times when they are most receptive to effective gift planning information. CFRE: Full participation in Gift Planning Marketing Strategies at the University of Minnesota is applicable for 1.25 points in Category 1.B -Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Susan Hommes, Senior Director, Office of Gift Planning, University of Minnesota Foundation
Susan Hommes joined the University of Minnesota Foundation in 2007, and has been Senior Director, Gift Planning since 2019.  She has over 30 years of experience in gift planning, previously serving in positions with United Way, Catholic Charities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and Community Action Council (360 Communities).  Susan earned her B.A. from the College of St. Benedict and her M.A. in public administration and management from Hamline University. Susan is a member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and the Minnesota Gift Planning Association, serving as its chair in 2006.  She currently serves on the board and is past president of the West Saint Paul/Mendota Heights Rotary Club, and is an active community volunteer.  She lives in St. Paul with her husband Joe and son Peter.





Cancellations/Refunds: Cancellations must be received by 12:00 pm two business days prior to the event in order to receive a full refund. No refunds will be processed after this time. Cancellations must be in writing and may be submitted to cteed@ccpgonline.org. Additionally, payment is expected from no-shows.
