    Job Description: 

    General Description - The Director is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive gift planning program to include prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of deferred gifts. As part of this effort, the Director will maintain a portfolio of gift planning prospects and donors. The Director is responsible for training of staff and volunteer leadership and the overall marketing of the program to the designated IIT donor community. The Director will develop and implement a program that will fully integrate with the mission and goals of the Institutional Advancement Department and University with goals of creating a culture of alumni gift planning, increasing gift planning revenue and growing the membership in the Gunsaulus Society.

    CommunicationsExcellent written, verbal and presentation skills would be required. This position will be external to our alumni population, volunteer leadership and other friends of the institution and internal to development officers and staff.

    Customer ServiceExternal and internal customers will be served. Externally, the Director will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward his/her own substantial portfolio of donor prospects. Internally, the Director will strategize with principal and major gift officers and serve as a resource to them to identify gift planning prospects within their portfolios to plan the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual gift plans as part of an overall current and deferred gift strategy. Externally and internally, the Director will develop and implement a gift planning training program for volunteer leadership, academic leadership and Institutional Advancement staff.

    Key Responsibilities - Manage and coordinate the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects for deferred gifts. The Director will maintain his/her own portfolio of prospects and donors and schedule at least 120 visits/year. The Director will serve as a strategic resource to principal and major gift officers to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward gift planning prospects and donors. Where appropriate, the Director will develop a strategy to incorporate a gift planning component to a major or principal gift proposal. (60%)

    Manage the design and implementation of a targeted marketing program, including a gift planning website, semi-annual planned giving newsletter, year-end appeal, and one-page informational pieces to inform various university constituencies at designated times of the advantages and opportunities of gift planning. The Director will accomplish this while working closely with the Institutional Advancement Communications team. The Director will develop and implement a strategy to grow the membership of the Gunsaulus Society and steward each member. (25%)

    Design and implement an ongoing training program for principal and major gift officers and volunteer leadership in gift planning vehicles, prospect identification, fluency in gift planning/planned giving conversations and legislative/programmatic updates. (5%)

    Oversee the internal administration of the Gift Planning Department. The Director will manage the records, processes and systems to ensure that appropriate gift acceptance policies are followed, realized estates and trusts are supervised to timely fruition and donors with income generating gifts are stewarded accurately. The Director will supervise the Assistant Director, Gift Planning. (10%)

    Education and Experience - A bachelor’s degree and JD degree with at least ten years of progressive, successful fundraising experience in major and gift planning programs or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Skills and Knowledge 

    - Demonstrated skills to serve as a technical expert for planned gifts prospects assigned to other development officers

    - Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with other team members, Board members, senior administration, and volunteers

    - Knowledge and skill in using gift planning software to produce gift illustrations

    - Ability to communicate persuasively, orally and in writing, the importance of philanthropy and the mission of IIT

    - Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

    - A high level of initiative and energy

    - Ability to think critically and articulate opinions
