10:15 AM - 11:15 AM – 2nd Session

DEI in the Fundraising Space
In response to feedback from community members and an increased national consciousness around racism, many higher education institutions made public commitments to creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society, starting with their campus. As we work to merge this commitment with our philanthropic efforts, many fundraisers are struggling with how to identify strategies for approaching their own work with an equity lens. In this session, we will explore how to incorporate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into your fundraising practices, ranging from fundraising for DEI-related initiatives to diversifying your donor base to hiring for your team. You will leave the session with a clear understanding of the business case for DEI in advancement and with some key strategies to consider applying in your own work.

SPEAKER:

Kat Walsh, Executive Director, DEI, University of Michigan

Ms. Walsh oversees the execution of the diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic objectives within the University of Michigan Office of Development, is the key fundraising liaison for the Vice Provost for Equity, and Inclusion, and serves on faculty at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. During her fifteen-year tenure at Michigan, Ms. Walsh developed the nationally award-winning Development Summer Internship Program (D-SIP). D-SIP introduces college students to fundraising as a career path through work placement in a fundraising office across the U-M campus, course work for credit, and a rigorous professional development component. In addition, Ms. Walsh developed the first comprehensive student giving program at U-M, resulting in 10,000+ students donating over $2 million during the Victors for Michigan Campaign, and oversaw the Telefund operation for five years. Finally, Ms. Walsh is certified trainer in the Intercultural Development Inventory, Emotional Intelligence and Diversity, Unconscious Bias, and Training Design for Intercultural Learning.
