Naming Rights — Current Practices

SPEAKER:
Adam Wilhelm, Vice President, Campbell & Company

Adam’s areas of expertise include healthcare, education, principal and major gift fundraising, campaign management, and fundraising strategy.  In addition to leading fundraising assessments, campaign studies and providing strategic counsel, Adam has held a number of interim leadership roles, including chief development officer, vice president, and campaign director, in advancement departments at hospitals, colleges and independent schools. Adam is a thought leader in the healthcare sector, and writes frequently on matters such as grateful patient programs and engaging physicians in philanthropy. He is also a guest speaker at events throughout the country. Adam joined Campbell & Company from the Lutheran School of Theology (Chicago).

TOPIC: 
Planned Gifts of retirement plans: rules and case studies

SUMMARY: Retirement plans make excellent planned gifts, but the rules are among the most complicated in the tax code. We will review the kinds of plans, rules for distributions, traps for the unwary, and review some cases where they can work.

SPEAKER: James C Provenza, Attorney and CPA

James Provenza - Graduated from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, with a BS in Accounting. Passed CPA exam, 1977. Graduated John Marshall Law School and is admitted to practice in Illinois. Worked at Ernst and Young in Tax Department before starting own practice in 1982. Office in Glenview. Was named a Leading Illinois Attorney in poll conducted by American Research Corporation. Practices in estate planning, estate administration, tax exempt organizations. Is a member of American Institute of CPA’s, Illinois State Bar Association Trusts and Estates Section, Northwest Suburban Bar Association, and the Chicago Council on Planned Giving. Is former President and founding member of Northern Illinois Planned Giving Council in Rockford and is a member of the Crusader Health Foundation Planned Giving Advisory Committee and the Salvation Army of Chicago Planned Giving Advisory Committee.

TOPIC: Charitable Endowments

SUMMARY: Many organizations consider fundraising for and stewardship of endowments a priority.  What are the key considerations with regard to charitable endowments?
  • How is an endowment defined and created?
  • What is the law governing endowments?
  • What are the standards of accounting for, investment of and spending from endowments?
  • How can the terms of an endowment be changed? 
  • What are best practices for endowment fundraising and stewardship?
SPEAKER: Philip M. Purcell, Vice President for Planned Giving and Endowment Stewardship

Phil Purcell currently serves as Vice-President for Planned Giving and Endowment Stewardship at the Ball State University Foundation. He is an attorney and member of the American and Indiana State Bar Associations.  Phil teaches courses on law and philanthropy, nonprofit organization law and planned giving as adjunct faculty for the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (Bloomington, IN) and Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and Fundraising School (Indianapolis, IN). Phil serves as a member of the Tax Exempt Organization Advisory Council for the Internal Revenue Service (Great Lakes states).  He has served on the board of directors for the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, Planned Giving Group of Indiana and Association of Fundraising Professionals - Indiana Chapter.  Phil maintains an active consulting practice.  He is a senior consultant for the Heaton Smith Group, a legacy planning consulting firm, and serves on the editorial advisory board for Planned Giving Today.  Phil received his B.A. degree from Wabash College (magna cum laude) and his J.D. and M.P.A. degrees (with honors) from Indiana University.
