    General Summary


    Reporting to the Senior Director of Gift Planning, the Director of Principal and Planned Giving is responsible for developing strategies for the solicitation of high-level principal and planned gifts from individuals through extensive field contact with prospective donors.  The Director of Principal and Planned Giving works with donors to determine the appropriate gift vehicles; including cash, securities, real property and other. The Director of Principal and Planned Giving will be expected to coordinate efforts with unit based development officers, central development professionals, and other university personnel where appropriate.


    Responsibilities & Duties


    • ·         Make assessment calls, cultivate, solicit, provide recognition and steward principal and planned gifts for the university with an emphasis on prospects capable of gifts at the $500,000 level and above to meet established goals. Actively qualify donors for any capital campaign.  Manage in varying stages of involvement a portfolio of prospects and donors to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation.  Develop and implement strategies for each prospect, including ways to increase involvement of donors and prospects in the activities of the university.  Utilize both current and planned gift opportunities to best meet donors’ needs, interests, and financial capabilities.


    • ·         Review research reports and information from the university donor management system database on assigned donors and prospects Plan trips and call donors to set appointments for visits. Build relationships for the university with donors, effectively present the case for philanthropic support of the university and explain gift opportunities. Follow up with correspondence, phone calls and additional visits as appropriate to close gifts.


    • ·         Provide regular progress reports on the prospect cultivation and solicitation, and complete and file thorough reports of all contacts in a timely manner.


    • ·         Meet regularly with unit based development officers or central development officers as appropriate to discuss major donor prospects strategy and solicitation.


    • ·         Perform other duties as assigned.


    Education & Experience


    • ·         Bachelor’s degree.


    • ·         Significant history of working with and advising high-net worth individuals and their families around investments, financial planning, and philanthropy.


    • ·         Minimum of 10 years experience working with high-net worth individuals and families surrounding philanthropic planning and wealth management.


    Preferred Requirements


    • ·         Advanced degree or other legal or financial planning and wealth management credentials.


    • ·         Development experience, or comparable sales/marketing/financial planning/wealth management experience involving individual relationship building.


    • ·         Certification in financial planning and wealth management.


    Other Skills & Abilities Required


    • ·         Ability to promote and successfully solicit high-level major gifts by identifying major gift prospects, managing caseload, designing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies, and ensuring follow-up activities and stewardship.


    • ·         Demonstrated communications and interpersonal skills and success in working in a team setting.


    • ·         Experience in a leadership capacity in a Catholic educational setting.


    Additional Information


    • ·         Must be able to travel frequently and work varied hours; frequent overnight and/or out of state travel for donor visits, alumni gatherings, and professional conferences.
