    The Director of Gift Planning is responsible for creating and executing an integrated strategy for all gift planning programs to advance the mission of Illinois Tech. The Director will develop and implement a program creating a culture of alumni gift planning, increasing gift planning revenue and growing the membership in the Gunsaulus Society. As part of this effort, the Director will maintain a portfolio of gift planning prospects and donors. He/she serves as a highly knowledgeable resource for other fundraising staff covering gift planning financial and legal strategies. This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts and Planned Giving.


    Qualifies prospects and secures gifts for the University

    Manages and coordinates the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects for deferred gifts. Maintains his/her own portfolio of prospects and donors. Manages portfolio in conformity with IIT’s prospect management protocol. Actively participates in prospect review sessions to develop the best strategies for assigned prospects. Documents donor prospect contact per university protocols; adheres to prospect management policy and process for assignments, proposal development and portfolio maintenance. Works with Prospect Research and Management team to ensure that portfolio and solicitation data in the IIT Raiser’s Edge database is current and accurate.

    Serves as a strategic resource to principal and major gift officers to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward gift planning prospects and donors. Where appropriate, develops a strategy to incorporate a gift planning component into a major or principal gift proposal.

    Marketing and Lead Generation

    Working closely with the Advancement Communications team, manages the design and implementation of a targeted marketing program, including a gift planning website, periodic planned giving newsletters, year-end appeal, and one-page informational pieces to inform various university constituencies of the advantages and opportunities of gift planning.

    Develops and implements a strategy to grow the membership of the Gunsaulus Society and steward each member.

    Subject Matter Expertise

    Serves as a gift planning subject matter expert to partner with front line fundraising officers. Conducts research concerning tax, legal and financial implications of complex gift plans. Maintains current knowledge and professional education regarding gift planning and Advancement; includes actively participating in professional association and continuing education activities.

    Designs and implements an ongoing training program for principal and major gift officers and volunteer leadership in gift planning vehicles, prospect identification, fluency in gift planning/planned giving conversations and legislative/programmatic updates.


    Directs and manages the University’s process for receiving realized bequests and comparable gifts from trusts, estates and retirement plans; includes significant interface with estate attorneys/executors, trust and fiduciary representatives. Directs and manages University’s relationship with external fiduciary vendors that administer split-interest gift arrangements for benefit of University donors.

    Participates in related Advancement programs as needed including solicitation of managed prospects for annual gifts. Participates in staff meetings, gift officer meetings, and university events both on and off campus designed to enhance donor engagement.

    Education & Experience:

    A bachelor’s and JD degree with at least ten years of progressive, successful fundraising experience in major and gift planning programs or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Working knowledge of tax law as it applies to planned gifts
    • Demonstrated skills to serve as a technical expert for planned gifts prospects assigned to other development officers
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with other team members, Board members, senior administration, and volunteers
    • Knowledge and skill in using gift planning software to produce gift illustrations
    • Ability to communicate persuasively, orally and in writing, the importance of philanthropy and the mission of Illinois Tech
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to think critically and articulate opinions
